BELTON, TX, November 01, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Garry Barr, a US Navy veteran who served from 1980 to 1990, has published Silent No More, a first-person account of sexual violence, harassment, and fear of exposure that he experienced as a gay sailor in the 1980s. The book documents events across several commands, including training at NTTC Corry Field and assignments aboard the USS Lexington and the USS Fort Fisher.
Barr writes that, at the time of his service, being identified as gay could result in investigation, charges, and a dishonorable discharge. That risk, he explains, kept him from reporting the assaults, threats, and hazing he endured. Service members were obligated to report sexual assault, yet doing so could expose their sexuality and end their careers. The memoir describes this contradiction and how it left many vulnerable.
The book also recounts Barr’s eight-hour questioning by the Naval Investigative Service, the decline in his performance and health that followed, and his decision to leave the Navy after nearly ten years of service. He was honorably discharged. Barr does not present the book as an indictment of the Navy. He states that its purpose is to end his own silence and to encourage victims of sexual violence to report.
In the Preface, Barr notes that he was not the only person affected. He describes two close friends who were also assaulted and removed from the ship without further explanation. He also describes the early years of women serving aboard Navy ships, when many faced hostility and were assigned the hardest work.
Silent No More describes Barr’s upbringing in a blended family, his decision to enlist, and the process of telling his father and stepmother he was gay at age forty. The book closes by acknowledging changes since his service, including the 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and its 2011 repeal. It lists reporting options through the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Army SHARP, and Disabled American Veterans, and notes that veterans can reach a Vet Center by calling 877-927-8387.
Barr states that the book is intended for all readers, not only military personnel or members of the LGBTQ community.
